Located along the Rhône River in Provence, Arles is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Southern France. Van Gogh was inspired by this landscape, which has drastically influenced the contemporary art displayed at the Fondation Vincent Van Gogh as a result of his paintings. Originally a provincial capital of ancient Rome, Arles is also renowned for its historic remains from that time, including the Arles Amphitheater (les Arènes d'Arles), which now hosts plays, concerts, and bullfights, and is well known for its ruins from that time.
