As a result of several archaeological excavations in Grignan, it has been proven that the rocky promontory of Grignan has been occupied since the Iron Age has been recorded. It is known that this area was once the home of a Bronze Age society, as well as a Roman capital in the 5th and 6th centuries. It has been noted that in the year 1035, the Abbassory of Saint-Chaffre in the Haute-Loire had a cartulaire (a ledger of church or monastery property titles) which mentioned an obscure castellum Gradignanum. It is believed that the name gradually evolved into the castrum Grainan (1105), then Graigna, Grazinam, etc, over the next century. As far as our knowledge of the history of the castle or the people who built it goes, we know very little. Sometime around the year 1030, it has been established that a certain Christophe de Grignan existed, and in 1035, the cartulary of Saint-Chaffre refers to a man named Rostagnus de castello Gradignano as “Rostaing du château de Grignan”.
