A collection of Grignan Doors from France

Several archaeological excavations have been conducted around Grignan's Doors of France recently, which have shown that the rocky promontory has been occupied since the Iron Age, when people began moving into the area. There have been records of the Bronze Age here, as well as Roman occupation during the 5th and 6th centuries AD, so this site is not new to humanity. According to history, in 1035, a cartulaire (a ledger of church or monastery property titles) from the Abbey of Saint-Chaffre in the Haute-Loire mentions the existence of a mysterious castellum Gradignanum, which was a site of pilgrimage. As the years went by, the castle's name steadily evolved, becoming the castrum Grainan (1105), then Graigna, Grazinam, etc. A very little can be said about the beginnings of the castle and who built it. A certain Christophe de Grignan has been proven to exist around the year 1030 and the Cartulary of Saint-Chaffre speaks of a person named Rostagnus de Castello Gradignano named Prince of Grignan. This is the first known account of a Prince of Grignan.
