Grignan, France - Stairs leading to a building

Description

In Grignan, France, there are some stairs leading to a building. Archeological excavations have been conducted in Grignan in recent years, and the findings have shown that living on the rocky promontory of Grignan has occurred since the Iron Age. This area has been documented as a Bronze Age settlement, and it was occupied by Romans in the 5th and 6th centuries AD. It has been noted by historians that in the year 1035, a cartulaire (a ledger of titles of property owned by a church or monastery) from Saint-Chaffre Abbey, in the Haute-Loire, mentions an obscure castellum Gradignanum. There are a variety of earliest names for a castle, the largest of which is Castrum Grainan of 1105, followed by Graigna and Grazinam. In order to understand the birth of the castle and those who built it, we must know a lot more information. In 1035, the cartulary of Saint-Chaffre, which relates to the Cartulary of St-Chaffre, speaks of the existence of a certain "Rostaing du château de Grignan, Rostagnus de castello Gradignano," who is possible the descendant of Christophe de Grignan.
