This is a stock photo of a street vendor in New York City
Description
Street vendors sell goods that can be easily transported, and as such can also be called peddlers or costermongers. This term is roughly synonymous with the term street vendor. As a rule of thumb, when this term is used in a given region, the hawker sells items or food that is native to the region. To attract attention and enhance sales, hawkers often use loud street cries and chants, as well as banter with customers, to draw attention and increase the sales of their wares. Demonstrators and pitchmen are terms that are sometimes used to refer to hawkers, accompanied by demonstrations and/or detailed explanations of the products that are being sold.
