Description

A number of archeological excavations have been conducted in Grignan, and it has been shown that the rocky promontory of Grignan has been inhabited since the Iron Age. A Bronze Age society was once present in this area, and Roman occupation occurred in the 5th and 6th centuries AD as well. As historians have noted, there is an obscure castellum Gradignanum mentioned in a cartulaire (a ledger of the titles of the properties of churches or monasteries) from the Abbey of Saint-Chaffre, in the Haute-Loire, which dates back to the year 1035. With time, the name of the castle gradually evolved over the next century into Castrum Grainan (1105), Castrum Graigna, Castrum Grazinam, etc. In relation to the birth of the castle and who built it, we know very little about their history. Around the year 1030, it has been established there was a man named Christophe de Grignan who was residing at Grignan Castle. As far back as 1035, however, the cartulary of Saint-Chaffre mentions the name Rostagnus de Castello Gradignano as a resident of Grignan Castle.
