In the center of Grignan, a French city in the north of France lies this church that can be found in the heart of the city.

A number of archeological excavations have been conducted in Grignan, and it has been shown that the rocky promontory of Grignan has been inhabited since the Iron Age. A Bronze Age society was once present in this area, and Roman occupation occurred in the 5th and 6th centuries AD as well. As historians have noted, there is an obscure castellum Gradignanum mentioned in a cartulaire (a ledger of the titles of the properties of churches or monasteries) from the Abbey of Saint-Chaffre, in the Haute-Loire, which dates back to the year 1035. As the name gradually evolved over the next century, the castle began to be known as Castrum Grainan (1105), then Graigna, Grazinam... Despite the fact that we know quite a bit about its origins as well as who built it, little is known about its history. There has been some speculation regarding the existence of Christoph de Grignan, and it has been suggested that he existed around the year 1030, as well as the existence of a Rostagnus de castello Gradignano listed in the cartulary of Saint-Chaffre in 1035.
