France's Doors are the most famous doors in the world. Archaeological excavations in Grignan have revealed that the rocky promontory of Grignan has been inhabited since a time during the Iron Age, as evidenced by the remains left behind by these settlements. During the 5th and 6th centuries AD, the site was inhabited by both Bronze Age societies as well as Roman societies. This area has been the subject of a great deal of research. A cartulaire (a ledger of church or monastic property titles) from the Abbey of Saint-Chaffre in the Haute-Loire, dated from 1035, mentions an obscure castellum Gradignanum in the year of 1035, according to historians. There is no doubt that, during the next century, the name of the castle gradually evolved into the Castrum Grainan (1105), and from there to Graigna, Grazinam,... To our knowledge, very little information about the building of the castle or about the people who were involved in its construction is known. In the year 1030, it seems that there were already attempts being made to establish the existence of a certain Christophe de Grignan, and around 1035, there appears to be a mention of a 'Rostaing du château de Grignan,' or Rostagnus of Chateau Gradignan, on the map of Saint-Chaffre.
